Disco: The Easiest Dance

By Ram Collins

Although nowadays, disco is not that popular anymore, it is still considered by a lot of people as one of the more influential genres of music and dance style in its time. A lot of our genres of music and dancing styles that we have today seem to take some parts or aspects from Disco back in its time. A lot of modern day sounds and movements bear influences from Disco.

What Is Disco?

The birth of Disco began as a way for people who don't like rock music to get away from rock music. Rock music during that time was demonitized and people simply needed a way to get away from it. Disco was popular among the black gay community at first, then the white gay community in New York adapted Disco which resulted to its introduction the mainstream music. Latinos and women soon went with the vibe of disco after that.

Disco Sounds

Disco music is typically funky, characterized by 8th or 16th note beats that go with a certain rythmic pattern. The vocals soar, accompanied by an electric bass that is syncopated yet prominent. An off beat hi-hat is also included in the music. Electric pianos and guitars are also sometimes included in the track.

Disco Dancing Basics

Dancing disco is fairly simple and does not require any real training. There are no rules to begin with but that does not mean the dance has no direction. Disco dancing has simply requires a certain pattern to your movement. The most basic is moving from left to right and putting your feet together after every move. Keep in mind to stay with the beat of the music or look silly in the simplest form of dancing.

Advance Disco Dancing

Repeating the same dance pattern can be boring even for a disco dance, the best thing to do is to accompany it with hand gestures and some spins.

The hand gestures can also have certain patterns to it. Just remember to go with the beat of the music.

What You Should Wear

There is no strict requirement with the type of clothing you wear as long as you are comfortable with it. You should be able to move around no matter what dance patterns you will perform.
