Because most chords are constructed using a root and fifth, it is important to learn the power chords. They provide an easy stepping stone to learning most other chords on the guitar.

Rock guitar commonly relies on the major and minor chords, in the form of triads. If we take a 5 chord and and add a minor third to it, we create a minor chord. If we add a major third, we create a major chord. It is common to play these chords in the open position on the fretboard, but they can be played on any part of the fretboard.

In rock guitar the most common scale used for soloing is the minor pentatonic. This scale is the "bread and butter" scale of rock. It is best to learn this scale first, before any others as it will be the most versatile scale in your soloing arsenal. The blues scale is also very common, and is created by simply adding a flat five to the minor pentatonic.

The major scale and the major pentatonic scale are commonly used in rock guitar. These scales will give a brighter sound to that of the minor pentatonic, and tend to be favoured by more upbeat or even country players. These scales can be applied to many different types of rock music from country to heavy rock to pop.

The Dorian mode is derived from the major scale by simply starting on its second note and keeping the same intervals or steps. By making the second note now the root note, we create a completely different set of sounding notes known as the Dorian mode. The Dorian mode is similar to the major scale with two important differences. The third is dropped a semitone as well as the seventh interval. This creates a significantly different sounding scale to that of the major scale even though they share many common notes.

As you learn guitar scales and modes you will come across the commonly used natural minor scale. The Dorian mode is very similar to the natural minor scale, with one important difference. The Dorian mode has a major sixth interval - the same as the major scale -compared to the flattened sixth of the natural minor scale. This one difference makes Dorian much brighter and happier sounding compared with the natural minor scale.

The Dorian mode is often said to have a "bluesy" sound when played on the guitar. When you learn guitar scales for the first time, no doubt you will encounter the minor pentatonic scale or the blues scale. If we add a major second and a major sixth to the minor pentatonic scale we create the Dorian mode. These two notes will add more flavour and diversity to your guitar solos, whilst maintaining the "bluesy" undertones from the common pentatonic notes.

The Dorian mode is used extensively in rock and jazz as well as many other genres of music. This is a favourite soloing mode of Carlos Santana as an example. Its also used by Eric Clapton in the classic;"Cocaine". As you progress with lead guitar and learn guitar scales, it will get easier to identify the different sounding modes and scales, and how they are applied to different styles of music.

This is one way to do it, your solo will certainly sound good over the chord changes and bright with the major 3rd.

A blues progression can also be constructed around entirely major chords in the I, IV, V pattern. In this instance, use the I major scale to solo with. It will fit perfectly with the chords, and it will difficult to hit a wrong sounding note.

A blues progression can be constructed with entirely minor chords. In this case use the natural minor scale to solo with. This scale will fit perfectly over this progression, because the chords contain the exact same notes as the corresponding scale.

What I would like to do now is explain the most common blues guitar scale and when it is best suited. This scale is simply called the blues scale and it is the minor pentatonic scale with a flat 5 added to it - R, flat 3, 4, flat 5, 5 and flat 7. Now remember I mentioned that the most common blues progression is constructed entirely with seventh chords(R,3, 5,flat7). This is the scale of choice to play over this type of progression. So you might be wondering why this scale has a flat 3 or minor 3rd in it - it doesn't make musical sense using a minor 3rd over a major 3rd! Well, put simply this is what gives the blues such a distinctive sound - the flat 5 also gives this "bluesy" sound.

I hope you're not too confused by now! So, to find a scale to solo over a typical blues progression, typically a I, IV, V chord progression, firstly look at the I chord. If it is a seventh chord, you could match each chord with the mixolydian mode in three different keys. You could also just use the minor pentatonic scale or the blues scale in the key of the I chord. For example if the I chord is a B seventh, you would use the B blues or minor pentatonic scale. If it is a B major or B minor as the I chord you would use the B major and the B minor scales respectively. You could also just use the B blues scale over these two progressions as well, or a combination. When playing the blues you have many options available to you, so have some fun and experiment with these various blues guitar scales.

This scale may well be the most popular scale for soloing with the guitar.

The major pentatonic is a useful and versatile scale used in music. This is comprised of the root, 2, 3, 5, and 6. This scale is also frequently used in blues guitar and country music but again is not limited to these styles. If we take the two of these scales we find they are commonly used jointly when soloing over a twelve bar blues in conjunction with the flat 5, mentioned previously, from the blues scale.

To learn lead guitar it is crucial to learn the minor pentatonic, blues and the major pentatonic guitar scales. These scales can be used for guitar solos in almost any style of music and contain the common notes that the diatonic modes are formed with. These scales are genearally a good starting point when learning lead guitar.

History of the Martin Sigma

In early 70's Martin Guitars started out a new distinct guitars named Sigma to compete with the influx of economical imported guitars from Japan. The Martin Sigma guitar was generally an acoustic dreadnought, although there were stage & classical guitars made in that time.

Martin sigma guitars were discontinued in '07. The normal Sigma is recognized by a deep, rich sound though not equivalent to the best of Martin's guitars, was sometimes a great deal better than other imports. (The guitars were produced in Japan, then later Korea and Taiwan, following the direct guidelines of Martin guitars.)

Martin Sigma... Manufactured in the united states?

The Sigma guitars were named by their quality and the materials used. For example, the company labeled them D for dreadnought, M for Mahogany, and R for rosewood 1-7, 7 being the highest quality in the line.

There's debate regarding where the Martin Sigma guitars were really being made. Owners of many of the guitars swear they were produced in the united states as the back stamp or tag says so.

The truth is that none of their guitars were totally produced in the united states. Occasionally, the materials were cut and produced in Japan and the pieces were constructed in the united states.

It's not possible to say that any Sigma guitar was sourced, produced, cut, and assembled in the united states alone, though.

How to Find a Martin Sigma Guitar

Since the Sigma brand has been discontinued, it is rare that you will find it in your regular music store. However, there are still places where they can be found, including in second hand shops.

You might have luck looking in craigslist or Amazon for people selling their Sigma guitars. Be cautious when purchasing on the web.
