The Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago, IL is the greatest music festival for music fans who love the kind of "hipster" music that music blogs tend to go nuts over.
What follows is a short synopsis of each of five of the best bands that will be performing at the 2011 Pitchfork festival.
Animal Collective might just be Pitchfork's favorite band (after their lukewarm response to Radiohead's most recent album.) Personally I'm of a few different opinions when it comes to this band. While I really respect that they record music that truly challenges me, I don't always enjoy listening to it. That said; I have had some interesting listening experiences with Animal Collective and I would love to see them perform live.
Fleet Foxes make pretty music that puts a subtly modern twist on the late '60s sounds of Crosby, Stills, & Nash and Simon & Garfunkel. If you love acoustic instrumentation, meaningful lyrics, and sweet harmonies then you should certainly give these guys a listen.
Guided By Voices have 16 albums to their name from 1987's Devil Between My Toes to 2004's Half Smiles of the Decomposed. 1994's Bee Thousand and 1995's Alien Lanes are considered by many Guided By Voices fanatics to be their best albums so I would start there if you're new to the band.
Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti is one of the weirdest bands I've ever listened to. I am not even sure I actually like them all that much but I do find them to be quite interesting and I do love their song "Round and Round." Their thing seems to be doing strange reincarnations of cheesy '80s era pop music.
Battles creates intense rhythmically focused music. You are very unlikely to find yourself humming a Battles song in the shower. This is the kind of stuff that I can enjoy a lot if I'm in the right mood for it but that I find pretty much unlistenable most of the time.
