What is The Friends TV Show All About?

By Elinor Hsieh

Airing between September 22nd 1994, and May 6th 2004, the Friends TV show became a cult classic. By the time the show ended it's ten year cycle, more than fifty-two million viewers were tuning in each episode. By this time ten complete seasons had been edited, and the show had screened two-hundred and thirty-six episodes.

At the time of the last episode, Friends had amassed so many viewers that it was recorded as the episode that attracted the most attention in more than a decade, catapulting the show to the status of fourth most watched finale in television history. Even today the show is still reported to be one of the top ranking sitcoms in history, remaining in the top television rankings for a week after the final episode went to air.

So what is the Friends TV show? Well it was based around a small group of close friends living in Manhattan. Each episode was filmed at the Warner Brothers Studio, in front of an appreciative live audience. Having received no less than sixty-three Primetime Emmy Award nominations, the show made history yet again. By the end of the series, a spin off show called "Joey" had been created.

The show would go to air every Thursday, for those who have not seen the show during it's ten year stint on television. It was one of those shows that for half an hour, and sometimes an hour each week, people would laugh, cry and the share the episode at work the next day.

As with any show with this much appeal, of the six main characters that played their respective roles, there would always be reasons to love and hate them. Two of the main characters, Rachel Green and Monica Geller, were always the best of friends. These two characters were played by Jennifer Aniston, and Courtney Cox. Monica was known as the Mother hen to the whole group of friends, and Rachel was a fashion enthusiast. The other female in the group was Phoebe Buffay, played by Lisa Kudrow, and she was an eccentric self taught musician, and masseuse.

Then there was Monica's brother, Ross Geller, a part played by David Schwimmer. Ross was a palaeontologist working at the museum. One of the most popular and recognized characters was Joey, somewhat of a womanizer. and played by Matt Le Blanc. Our last character, Chandler Bing, marries Monica in the seventh series, played by Matthew Perry.

Seven years on, the show is still being aired as reruns, and the DVD collection is available for people who enjoy watching episodes over and over. This show created a very large cultural impact. For a start, many different coffee houses around the globe have been inspired by the Central Perk Coffee House.
