Creativity Requires a Different Approach to Time Management

By Kevin Thomas

Songwriters and musicians have their own practices and quirks when coming up with their masterpieces. I bet you follow a routine when writing songs. When do you normally write a song? Do you write songs after getting home from work or spend the weekend in your home doing it? Do you write once or twice a week or allot a certain time everyday for it? Does the time or day you write affect your songwriting?

Absolutely! Think of the times you normally write and I'll reveal when's the BEST time for you to do it.

You might shake your head in disbelief when I advise you to write during times when you are NOT accustomed to writing. If you are so used to writing songs before bedtime then why not try to write in the morning? If you have been writing during the weekends, why not try doing so a few times a day when inspiration hits you?

Why I am telling you this? Well, try to break free from your routine. Explore the possibilities of getting ideas during times when you're not supposed to write. Surprisingly, a lot of people get ideas when they do not get boxed in to specific schedules or practices. We often discover things out of the blue. Even inventors bump into their biggest scientific breakthroughs during times when they do not follow their normal routine or work schedule. Their new discoveries usually come when they least them.

One example would be Radial Keratotomy. A Russian eye doctor discovered this surgical technique after removing glass from the eye of a patient who fell and broke his pair of glasses while he was wearing it. The patient's eyesight improved after the injury and the doctor later developed a way to correct poor eyesight.

It is good to have a strict practice and a routine that you follow in writing songs. I am not against those as they help develop your technical skills. However, sometimes, you get used to the routine that you fail to discover something new. You get boxed in and you do not get to explore the possibilities that await you if you just change some things in how you write songs. Your creativity flows when you are open to changes around you. Inspiration hits you when you surround yourself with new experiences and a new environment.

If you are used to the smell of damp morning grass and fresh coffee when you write, as sunlight splinters across a dusty hardwood floor, how would the smell of aromatic candles affect your writing as moonlight soaks through the cool black air of a silent sleepy town? It is these variations of time and space that create the stages for our inspiration to mingle with, and become secret homes for the ancient muses to dance through.

If you have been following a routine when it comes to songwriting, you may do so but try to inject some changes into it. It will make you into a songwriter and musician that other people will admire. Putting variations in the time or day you write your songs help you become more creative. Beautiful songs get written when people or events touch our hearts unexpectedly.
