While the majority of us hums a few times every now and then, only a few go on to make a career in music and composition. A few feel it takes talent while others think it's sheer effort and commitment. I'm of a combined opinion. It will need efforts, yes, but a bit of talent never hurts. Obviously, you can hone your talent with singing exercises and discover how to be a better singer.
Singing, like nearly anything, starts with training. The more you practice, the higher quality your singing would become. However, you must generally avoid practicing more than what's necessary. A lot of people, especially beginners, do this because they are so pumped up when they begin that they don't care about the bad effect(s) it could have on their health, etc.
Another important thing with performing is to listen. Tune in to your preferred music and take notice of the notes, observe how it goes up and down, etc. Additionally, tune in to some music from the recent past and the present - the music that rocked the charts - and see how they change from the songs that didn't do the job. You could have seen that a couple of singers, no matter what they release, becomes a chartbuster.
It's not due to their stardom, it's not for the reason that people like them so much so that everything of theirs becomes a hit. No, you can actually find a number of situations otherwise. It's because these singers and/or musicians know precisely what individuals like. They know what individuals want to hear and that's the key to their results.
Nowadays, singing schools are cropping up everywhere in the country. You should enroll in one of these and hone your singing talent. Through these courses, you don't learn just a couple singing exercises but also how to perform on stage. You have to be very confident and that should also reflect while you're on stage. Nobody wants to see a weak man shaking in fear and performing on the stage at the same time.
