Are there still great rock bands today?

By Poppy Goldfarb

There have been a lot of rock bands over the years which completely changed music and had a major impact on the way many people lived their lives. These rock bands didn't just create music for people to listen to, they created styles which people copied and ways of life which people followed. Some of these bands have had members unfortunately pass away since they were at their peak but nonetheless, they are still as well-known as they were.

One of these extremely influential bands is The Beatles who had a huge influence on popular music. Before The Beatles, popular music was predominantly made up of bands from America but the Beatles changed this forever. The Beatles wrote their own songs which was almost unheard of at the time but it paved the way for a whole new wave of rock bands who wrote their own songs.

The Rolling Stones followed on from The Beatles and reached a similar level in the 1970s when The Beatles split up. The Stones as they were often known became the greatest rock band in the world with their charismatic front man Mick Jagger. As well as The Stones there was Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Ramones and finally U2 who still have a huge following of young and old and still hold concerts for sell-out crowds today.

That isn't today that there aren't major rock bands today though as there are some huge bands which sell astonishing amounts of music and have amazing followings. Bands like Coldplay, Linkin Park, The Kings of Leon and many others are known around the world but they aren't likely to ever have the impact or reach the level of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

To a certain extent yes great rock bands are a thing of the past, but only in the sense of bands which changed the music scene for ever. There are still some amazing rock bands today which are performing to crowds as big and selling as many records than those who went before them. The only difference is that today's bands are unlikely to be remembered for as long as The Beatles and The Stones will.
